NHS Norfolk & Suffolk ICB migrates integration engine to OIE with NovaMap Health
NovaMap Health is pleased to announce that NHS Norfolk & Suffolk ICB has migrated from its integration engine to the Open Integration Engine (OIE) and signed a Product Support contract with NovaMap Health for ongoing assurance.
The new ICB funds NHS services for the 1.7 million people of Norfolk and Suffolk and relies heavily on its integration engine to move clinical and administrative messages between core NHS systems. Following the March 2025 announcement that all future releases of Mirth Connect™ would no longer be open source, the ICB took the decision to move to OIE, the vendor-neutral drop-in successor.
Existing channels, templates and scripts carried forward to OIE unchanged — preserving the operational knowledge the ICB's integration team had built up over years on Mirth Connect.
Under the agreement, NovaMap Health provides the ICB with:
- Direct access to NovaMap's OIE engineering team for code-level support
- Patches, hardening guidance, and proactive vulnerability advisories
- The OIE TLS Manager plugin as a replacement for the existing licensed plugin
- Roadmap visibility and a route to influence OIE development through the open community
"Transitioning our integration engine to the Open Integration Engine was a critical task for the ICB, but NovaMap Health's OIE TLS Manager plugin and their support, provided the expertise and peace of mind we needed to move forward with confidence."
Two outcomes the ICB highlighted:
- Cost savings. Migrating from a paid Mirth Connect™ licence to OIE removes a recurring software cost from the ICB's budget, with no loss of capability. Public funds previously routed to a proprietary licence stay within the NHS.
- Greater ownership. OIE is vendor-neutral and open source. The ICB is no longer dependent on a single vendor's release schedule, pricing decisions, or support roadmap — and can contribute to the engine's development directly if it chooses to.
