OIE is now Eclipse Open Integration Engine
We're pleased to announce that the Open Integration Engine has completed its Eclipse Foundation creation review and entered incubation. The project's formal name is now Eclipse Open Integration Engine.
Eclipse Open Integration Engine, or Eclipse OIE for short, is the drop-in open source successor to Mirth Connect™: a community-governed rescue fork of the original codebase, licensed under MPL 2.0 and fully compatible with existing channels and configurations. The project applied to join the Eclipse Foundation in June. Community review and creation review both happened in the open, and the project is now hosted by the Foundation.
As Gary Teichrow, the original creator of Mirth Connect™, puts it:
"When the open-source road for Mirth closed, the community stepped up. Open Integration Engine 4.6.0 is exactly what healthcare interoperability needs right now: an uncompromised, vendor-neutral, community-governed platform. The project has my full backing."
What changes
The project name and its marks are now held by the Eclipse Foundation rather than by any individual or company. No single vendor can take the name, change the license, or put OIE behind a paywall, because no single vendor owns it. Development runs under the Eclipse Development Process, with the IP review and provenance practices that come with it.
Furthermore, the Eclipse Foundation Security Team is the first point of contact for vulnerabilities in Foundation projects, bringing frontier AI models into vulnerability discovery alongside traditional security tooling.
What stays the same
Nothing about the day-to-day changes. The code stays open under the same license, the plugins stay free, and the community keeps directing the work in the same repositories with the same issue tracker and the same Discord. If you're running OIE in production today, there is nothing here you need to act on.
Where NovaMap fits
Our CEO, Paul Richardson, submitted the Eclipse proposal and is one of the project's three leads, with Christopher Gibson and Sean Rowe.
We're one of several vendors that support Eclipse OIE, so you're never locked to us. We contribute to the project, we built and donated the open source TLS Manager Plugin, and we offer product support contracts. What's next
Groundwork for an Eclipse Working Group continues, separately from project creation. That is where organizations depending on Eclipse OIE can shape its roadmap, fund its growth, and help promote it across the industry.
